“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if anyone would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you”(Matthew 5: 38-42).

These words from the Sermon on the Mount lie at the heart of Jesus’ message, and his practical approach to life. It doesn’t seem practical, perhaps; certainly it makes no sense to our limited ego consciousness. But it expresses the essence of how to release ego consciousness and fill our lives instead with the Presence and Power of Spirit that is our true identity.

DO NOT RESIST! How often in the course of a day we need to be reminded of that guidance! Do not resist. This doesn’t mean that Jesus’ teachings are meant to turn us into victims. There is no spiritual benefit to remaining in abusive or dangerous situations. But if we turn away without judgment, if we allow ourselves to be guided to our good without trying to strike back, we lift ourselves safely out of combative situations and into a state of perfect peace. We feel love instead of resentment. We give joyfully instead of feeling forced.

That which is freely given will become a part of the flow of divine energy in the universe, and will be returned to us many times over. Anything given grudgingly, on the other hand, will only expand on our sense of lack, allowing more negative energy in our lives and relationships.

Today, in the face of every major or minor challenge, I release any attempt to resist or control, claiming instead the divine gifts of clarity, peace and guidance that dissolve all challenges.
