Yesterday we discussed the power of understanding, and the rich rewards of developing an understanding heart. Today we add the power that is often called understanding’s twin – the power of WILL. Understanding alone will not activate the creative process within us. We must say “Yes!” to what we have come to understand, by connecting it to the power of will, in order to bring creative energy into expression.
Will, like the power of judgment we’ve already discussed, is extremely vulnerable to misinterpretation and misuse. If we inadvertently link it to ideas of lack, limitation and separation, we create a “self-will” that can be at odds with the divine idea of will. Even Jesus, at the very peak of his Christ expression, recognized the dangers of self-will. In the Garden of Gethsemane, moments before his arrest, his greatest surrender lay in the words, “Not my will, but thine be done (Matthew 26: 39).”
How can we know the difference? How can we tell our limited ego will from the will of our Spirit self?? Well, when we are properly expressing the divine idea of will within us, we can’t. At such moments, when we are truly connected to the spiritual dimension within us, there is no difference. Spirit’s will for us is always perfect good, because that is the only nature Spirit recognizes. What else but perfect good and unconditional love could we want for ourselves?
The challenge comes when we allow our self-will to become enmeshed in ideas of separation and lack. The easiest way to recognize that this is happening is to take the energy back to its source. If we are able to see that our will is based in fear – if we are willing to do something because we’re afraid of the possible consequences if we don’t – then we can be sure that we are not at one with Spirit. If, on the other hand, our power source is love – for ourselves, for others, for the world, for Good – then we can know that the good we will for ourselves and the good Spirit would have us enjoy are one and the same.
Today, in the face of every doubt and challenge, I choose only to experience the perfect expression of Spirit at every moment.
