“To those who have,” Jesus told his followers, “more will be given” (Luke 19:26).

This may seem like a surprising affirmation, given what we think we know about Jesus’ message. To those who have, more will be given. And to those who have not, even what they have will be taken away.

This sounds a lot like the cynical saying that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. What kind of message is it for the have-nots of the world, to be told that their own meager existence is in jeopardy, while the rich and powerful will continue to grow stronger? Where’s the hope?

Well, in fact, there is precious little hope for people who expect Jesus to do the work for them while they continue to see things as they always have.

What Jesus is defining in this teaching is the law of prosperity, the law of attraction, the law of the universe. It isn’t good or bad. It’s God. It simply is. If we are ever going to accomplish a full expression of our own spiritual power, we will need to understand how the universe works.

And it works as consciousness. If we look at our lives today and focus on appearances of lack, the universe will respond to that focus, and we will create more lack. If instead we look on today and see all the gifts, the abundance that is present on even our darkest days, then our appreciation will attract more good to our lives. It’s not up to God. It’s up to us.

Today, I give thanks for the good already expressing in my life, and I know and affirm that the power of attraction is drawing greater good to me now. Thank you God.
