Jesus often refers to God with a term usually translated into English as “Father.” In fact however, the Aramaic word he uses most is “Abba”, or “Papa.” It may technically mean the same thing, but its emotional sense is quite different. “Abba” is an affectionate term that might be used for a father, or a grandfather, or any source of loving guidance and support.
“God the Father” is predominately a church-created concept. It is useful, but it can feel rather cold, dictatorial, descriptive of a stern task master. “Abba,” however, is more like a kindly uncle or supportive teacher – a rich source of unconditional love and acceptance that appreciates who we are and celebrates our progress through life.
Whether or not our own parents offered the loving guidance we sought or still seek, all the acceptance, strength and support we need are ours - from the loving, gift-bearing “Abba” that Jesus assured us was within us all. And the way in which we experience the infinite love of God is exactly the way in which we will express it in our lives and relationships.
Today I feel and affirm the all-sufficiency of God as love. I AM accepted and appreciated without judgment or doubt. Thank you, God!
